Graphika Manila 2013

My first Graphika Manila conference yesterday was a blast! :) All of the speakers had one thing in common, they love doing their craft. It's really their passion that fuels them to do great and awesome things!

JAMES WHITE / signal noise / graphic design

  • have personal projects, the kind that makes you stay up in the morning until 3am
  • do what you love to do even if there is no monetary gain in it, eventually money will follow
  • if you don't have client work, do personal projects
  • explore. play.
  • on social media don't try to do all, just select some where you can maximize its effects, or where you can best promote your art
Here are some of James' work:

We left the conference feeling inspired by the speakers! Will update this with the rest of the awesome people! :)

Purple Pig Balloon

We love birthday surprises at the office. So when the head of our accounts got a year older we decided to surprise her with the things she like! And she likes purple things & pigs.
What better way to surprise her with a purple pig balloon! Everybody at the office gave her a purple balloon with a birthday greeting. So I drew a pig and since I belong to the digital department, I decided to give her a QR code message! (because it makes me look techie & cool! niyahaha) :)

Happy Birthday Rissa! :)

Help me name this piece

Finally found the time to squeeze in a blog post! I have been planning to do it this morning, but after my exercise, breakfast and bath, I just went back to bed. :( Then I watched blueberry nights (which my friend is itching for me to watch). And now I want a blueberry pie! So anyway I'm back, this piece is yet to be named (maybe you could help me name this one.).

I started with light colors (meaning lots of water than paint) gradually darkening some of the parts (less water or directly from the tube). Then I added the details using pencil, usually I only use darker shades of watercolor or gouache to add the detail, but I decided to try something different and see how it goes.

I like the effect of the pencil. The only challenge I got are the pencil smudge marks, (you know when you draw, the graphite transfers to your hand) to solve this problem I placed paper on top of my artwork so everything will be clean. And that's it. :)

Pot Illustration

My first post for 2013 yay! Got another commish illustration from a friend. She's very stylish and loves to collect pigs, that's why there are cute pink pigs on her dress. :)

Did an initial sketch & color study first before I proceed with the final artwork. It took the few remaining hours of my weekend last week. I hope she likes it.

That's it for now. I have a few personal projects I'm currently working on, hopefully i'll be able to finish some of them this month!
